Three ways to get a camera into Conflux.
Every camera reaches Conflux the same way: as an SRT stream over the internet. What makes the stream is up to you. The cheapest is a phone with a £20 dongle; the most hands-off is a small encoder box; the most flexible is a laptop running OBS or vMix. All three are set up from the panel in about a minute.
A phone and a capture dongle
An iPhone 15 or later (iOS 17 or newer) or any recent Android phone takes an HDMI-to-USB capture dongle as a camera. The free Larix Broadcaster app sends it to Conflux over SRT. The phone's own camera works too, with no dongle at all.
- Best for: a second camera, a roving camera, a lectern feed, a backup
- Set-up: scan a QR code from the panel
- Watch out for: heat on long shows, and the one USB port
A small encoder box
An HDMI or SDI encoder that sends SRT on its own: Kiloview E1/E2, Magewell Ultra Encode, Osprey Talon or similar. Plug in the camera and the network, type the settings from the panel, and it runs all day on mains power.
- Best for: a fixed camera that streams every month, a board room, a lectern
- Set-up: the panel's Address, Port and Stream ID, once
- Watch out for: buy one that says SRT, not only RTMP
OBS or vMix on a laptop
OBS (free) or vMix on a laptop with a capture card sends SRT or RTMP, and can mix several cameras first. This is what most production crews already own.
- Best for: a crew with a laptop and a capture card already
- Set-up: paste the panel's settings into the output
- Watch out for: the laptop doing too much at once; keep the stream on its own machine if you can
What to buy, and what not to.
| Item | What to look for | Why | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone | iPhone 15 or later on iOS 17+, or an Android phone from the last few years with a USB-C port | Older iPhones with the Lightning port can't take a capture dongle | — |
| Capture dongle | "HDMI to USB video capture", UVC, USB-C or USB-A with an adapter. Any brand; the £15–25 ones are fine | They give 1080p at 25 or 30 frames. The "4K" on the box is the input, not what you get out; ignore 50/60p claims | £15–25 |
| USB-C hub with power | A small hub with "power delivery" or "pass-through charging" and at least one USB-A or USB-C port | The dongle takes the phone's only port; a show is longer than a battery | £20–35 |
| Larix Broadcaster | From the App Store or Google Play. The free version does everything here; the paid extras are optional | It sends SRT, takes the dongle as its camera, and imports all its settings from a QR code | Free |
| A stand and some shade | Anything that keeps the phone upright, off a hot surface and out of the sun | Phones get warm sending video for two hours; a warm phone slows down | — |
| A second phone | Any phone with Larix, even without a dongle | Add it as the backup input in Conflux. If the first phone stops, Conflux switches to it by itself | — |
From the panel to on air in five steps.
- 01Add the input in the panel.
Inputs › Add. Give it a name and choose "vMix or an SRT encoder". A camera that can't type a Stream ID gets its own port: choose "Camera / encoder with no Stream ID field" instead.
- 02Open "How to connect" and press "Phone sender".
A QR code appears with every setting inside it, and the same values written out for typing into an encoder box or OBS.
- 03Scan it with Larix.
In Larix: Settings › Connections › the camera icon, point it at the code. The connection appears, named after the input, with 1080p25 at 4 Mb/s already set.
- 04Plug in the dongle (or use the phone's camera), then press the red button.
In Larix's camera settings pick the capture dongle as the camera. The input in the panel turns green within a few seconds and shows the bitrate and any loss.
- 05Add the backup.
Add a second input the same way and set it as the first one's backup. Conflux switches between them for you and tells you why.
For any encoder or app.
| Setting | Value | Note | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protocol | SRT, Caller mode | Conflux listens; your device calls | |
| Address and port | From the panel, e.g. your-show.conflux.tv, port 8890 | A "no Stream ID" input has its own port, 9001 to 9004 | |
| Stream ID | From the panel: publish:<input>:<user>:<password> | Leave empty on a "no Stream ID" input; it uses a passphrase instead | |
| Latency | 500 ms | Raise to 1000–2000 ms on poor connections; both ends should match | |
| Video | 1080p25, H.264, 4–6 Mb/s, a keyframe every 2 s | 25 frames to match the programme; 50 only if the show is 50 | |
| Sound | AAC, 48 kHz, 128 kb/s or more | Stereo is fine; Conflux takes what you send | |
| Internet needed | About 1.5 × the video rate as upload: 6–9 Mb/s for 4 Mb/s video | Test it on the day with a speed test on the same connection |
